A standard dialogue moderation serves the purpose of coordinating a conversation and exchange information and opinions. Making use of various methodical techniques the moderator may direct the processes in a group of participants. He or she is a systematic support, not an expert in the problem's content.
The goal as well as the structure of conflict moderation are similar to conflict consultations. There is however one significant difference: in a moderated conflict the conversation is chaired by a neutral moderator. If and when necessary the moderator calms the counterparties, reminds them of the conversational structure and steers the conversation back onto a structured course. It is of great importance that the moderated conversation be held in a physical location which does not give a 'home advantage' to either party. For this reason a neutral office location or the outdoors may be appropriate.
After the moderated conflict consultation the involved parties put the agreed accords into action. After a previously determined period of time, correct adherence to the stipulated plan of action is evaluated. To conclude the sessions, a feedback including all involved parties is held. However, even moderated conflict consultations which are not carried through to the final stages of a concluding conflict resolution can pave the way towards a conflict solution; not least towards deciding to sign up for a mediation.
